HAWTHORNE IN BLOOM
I was walking along the River in Somerset and there ,so early in the year ,was this Hawthorne, a whole tree ablaze against an azure sky. It seemed unreal after months of grey. But it was real. Cicely Mary Barker said in her poem illustrated by her painting of the Hawthorne fairy that the Hawthorne is the first. It is brave and forges ahead.
THE FIRST DAFFODILS
So I kept on my very Spring, late Winter ramble beside the river that runs through the neighbouring town, next there were the first few shy daffodils.
THE DAFFODIL FAIRY
I’m everyone’s darling; the blackbird and
starling
Are shouting about me from blossoming
boughs;
For I, the Lent Lily, the Daffy-down-dilly,
Have heard through the country the call to
arouse.

THE SNOWDROPS ARRIVE
I had seen snowdrops already up high above the coast among the hills that run above the town, nearly a moorland heath but not quite, there are farms up there. And as the tiny country bus winds its way between fields, on the tops the banks either side of the road through the village and the farmer’s fields, there are rows and rows of snowdrops, brave against the altitude and the bitter winds. There are even snowdrops next to the castle and in the churchyard, carpets of them.
SPRING
The World is very old;
But year by year
It groweth new again
When buds appear.
Then there were more and more of them at the house at Raveningham where there were countless snowdrops in circles, around trees and between flowerbeds. Everything else is asleep but the snowdrops are up and ready.
They are ready for the world, for everything, they have all they need. Hope.
My Mum loved the flower fairies’ poems and so do I.
They are so beautiful
