Poetry From A Railway Car
Blog by Lynne Pearl
It was suddenly lovely, with the brilliant sunshine that is only possible in winter, with no haze. So, I snatched my camera and headed out.
I took a train along the coast, one of the best train journeys on the British rail network. The track runs next to the sea and at high tide is splashed by sea water. So, I could get pictures from the inside of the railway carriage. There the track runs beside the estuary, then beside the beach until it reaches the next tidal estuary.
Robert Louis Stevenson in 1885 wrote, in ‘A Child’s Garden of Verses.’ :
From a Railway Carriage
‘Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches…
And ever again in the wink of an eye
Painted stations whistle by…’
The day and the train ride was just like that.
My Dad loved the poem and so do I.
The trains are so romantic.
